GERIATRICS: A MULTI-CAMPUS
The University of South Carolina School of
Medicine-Division of Geriatrics enjoys a long-standing collaborative
relationship with the Palmetto Health Division of Geriatric Services.
Joined by a deep commitment to develop geriatric programs which serve
older adults in South Carolina, the collaboration received the
prestigious Leader in Geriatric Innovations award from the SAGE
Institute’s Geriatric Best Practices in 2004.
Based out of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine,
Palmetto Health Richland and the Dorn VA, the Division of Geriatrics and
its cooperating institutions represent over 30 faculty across multiple
disciplines. Dr. Paul Eleazer is the chief of the Division of
Geriatrics, Dr. Andrew Weinberg is the head of Geriatrics and Extended
Care at the Dorn VA and Dr. Victor Hirth is the medical director for
Geriatric Services at Palmetto Health. Division of Geriatrics activities
include: clinical care, teaching of medical students, residents and
fellows as well as a multifaceted research program.
The
Geriatric Fellowship Program, started in 1997, is the only program
in the state to train fellows in geriatric medicine. It provides for
one-year fellowships with an optional second year for research. The
Senior Primary Care Practice serves as a clinical training site and
provides care for over 3,500 area seniors.
Palmetto Senior Care, one of
the first 5 PACE demonstration sites in the nation, also serves as an
important training site for residents and fellows.
Research and Grant related awards have included two faculty with
Geriatric Academic Career Awards, Duke Foundation grant for senior
hypertension, Hartford and Donald W. Reynolds grants to improve training
of residents and faculty in geriatrics, as well as a VA PACE
demonstration project. Clinical trials in Alzheimer’s disease,
osteoporosis, exercise are ongoing and numerous other studies are in
development. In the past year over $1 million of grant funds have been
received and nearly $10 Million in the past few years.
Our mission is: To Meet the Needs of Older South Carolinians, Their
Families, Their Communities, and Health Care Providers through
Coordinated Service, Education, and Research.
