Welcome to the University of South
Carolina School of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine. It’s an
honor for me to be chairman of a department that prides itself on a
commitment to service, a charge to educate the highest
quality physicians, and a vision to improve the future of health
care through an active research program. |

Our faculty members are dedicated to preparing
future generations of physicians. Known for innovative approaches to teaching,
many have been honored with awards for their excellence in medical student and
resident education. The three-year Internal Medicine residency program provides
settings, as well as rotations through a diverse array of subspecialties. Strong
partnerships with Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital and William Jennings Bryan Dorn Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center provides an exciting training
environment. Fellowships are available in Endocrinology, Geriatrics, and
Pulmonary Diseases.
I'm proud to announce that the Department of Internal Medicine has recently
received its third endowed chair. In addition to Charles Bryan, M.D., who
holds the Heyward Gibbes Distinguished Chair, Allan Brett, M.D., who holds
the O.B. Mayer Sr. and Jr. Chair, Ali Rizvi, MD has been named to the A.
T. Chalk Chair for Diabetes Care and Research. Through University Specialty Clinics,
we provide General Internal Medicine and subspecialty services in Rheumatology,
Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care, Dermatology, Allergy and Immunology,
Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Geriatrics, and Infectious Diseases. The entire faculty, along with residents and
medical students, is involved through Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in
providing a tremendous amount of medical care to the underserved members of our
community and state. The Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center is a
tremendous part of our program for education, patient care and research. |
